September 12 & 13 set as tour dates
Mark these dates on your calendar, and be sure to attend the 1996 AFWA annual meeting and tour at Innisfail, Alberta.
AFWA president Coralie Adams and secretary/treasurer Colin Campbell have lined up an impressive list of tour destinations, as well as speakers to be featured at this year's annual.
According to Adams, invitations to this year's event have been extended to Innisfail and area MLA Gary Severtson, a well as to the town's Mayor. But the highlight of the trip is sure to include a presentation by Gary Haley, President and CEO of Canada West Foods.
Canada West Foods is a Calgary-based food company composed of three business units: specialty meats (notably lamb), case-ready retail fresh meats, and value-added meat products targeted to international markets.
Haley's background includes experience with both agricultural commodities and value-added food products. He was Regional Manager of Cargill Grain, prior to co-founding Palliser Grain Co. in 1980, for which he was President and General Manager.
A graduate of the Harvard Business School Owner-Presidents' Management Program, Haley also holds an MBA from IMEDE in Lausanne, Switzerland. Current professional memberships include the Young Presidents' Organization and the Alberta Economic Development Authority.
The cost of the annual meeting and tour is $50, which includes Thursday's lunch and barbecue supper, and Friday's lunch, as well as transportation to tour destinations.
Please review the enclosed agenda, and be sure to respond to Colin Campbell with your registration form and cheque by August 30.

Alberta's attempt to keep a general farm organization in the Canadian 'house of agriculture' has failed.
Last week, Wild Rose Agricultural Producers was kicked out of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) for not paying its dues.
A makeover of the group formerly called Unifarm has not attracted sufficient support to allow Wild Rose to pay its fees to the CFA.
This means the CFA will not receive the $60,623 it had expected from Alberta this year, causing the national farm lobby some financial problems. More importantly, the CFA no longer has an Alberta general farm voice.
Producers, however, are represented through the three prairie Pools' joint representation in the CFA.
Wild Rose, with 1,900 members and a budget of $190,000, has its Edmonton building up for sale and has been laying off staff.

Since August 1995, prices to registered producers have increased by 14 cents across the board. Price per dozen for Canada Grade A extra large and large size are now $1.46, up from $1.32 in 1995.
Canada Grade A medium size will net the producer $1.35, up from $1.21 this time last year.
Cost of feed grains has played a major role in the increased prices.
